UNICAL suspends student for repeatedly breaching matriculation oath

2024-10-05  DR SUGAR ADMIN

The University of Calabar has suspended one Livinson Arikpo, a student of the Department of Soil Science, from studies for repeatedly acting in breach of the University's Matriculation Oath.

According to a letter of suspension addressed to the affected student and signed by the University Registrar, Mr Gabriel Egbe, Livinson Arikpo has repeatedly been involved in acts of lawlessness capable of disrupting the peace and serenity of the University.

In one instance, Livinson Arikpo was reported to have, shortly after the inauguration of the immediate past Student Union Government (SUG) Executives, allegedly locked the SUG President out of his official residence in the hostel, demanding that he (Livingson Arikpo) be "settled as a stakeholder".

Recently, precisely on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, Livinson Arikpo was alleged to have taken advantage of the epileptic power supply on campus and mobilized some students to protest, locking out staff and peace-loving students.

Livinson Arikpo was said to have vehemently rebuffed all requests by the Substantive SUG President, the Dean of Students and other well-meaning staff to open the gates.

As if that was not enough, he was said to have forcefully put off the generator that supplies power to the pumping machine used to supply water to the hostels with the intent to incite the students against the University Administration.

The letter reads in part... "Such uncivilized and lawless conducts are unbecoming of a

student, who is supposedly trained in character and learning. Your actions, as

you know, contravene the provisions of the Students' Handbook and your Matriculation Oath.

The Vice-Chancellor has therefore directed that you should be suspended.

You are hereby suspended from all academic activities of the University while the matter is referred to the Students' Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.

Your suspension takes effect from July 3, 2024. You are to stay away from the

premises of the University of Calabar unless while responding to the invitation of the

Disciplinary Committee."

To this end, the Dean of Agriculture, the HOD of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Ag. Chief Security Officer have been enjoined to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
